A 19-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot by police during a welfare check at a home in Arana Hills, located in Brisbane.

According to reports, the incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday when three officers responded to concerns about the teenager’s wellbeing. During the encounter, the young man allegedly produced a large kitchen knife, prompting police to open fire.

The teenager was shot twice in the abdomen in front of his mother and was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
